Ahead of its time

Name:

Viviane Da Rocha Gonçalves

Education:

BSc in Business Administration and International Business, MBA in Finance.

Position at NORDEN:

Head of Dry Cargo, Brazil

How long have you been with NORDEN?

I started in January 2013.

Fun fact

Crossfit is my favourite sport in the world, and I usually like to start my day off with it to get ready for work. In my spare time, I like to travel to my hometown to visit my parents and brothers. They have a small brewery, and we brew beer together. My favourite is the stout beer with bacon flavour - it is a family special!

What is your background?

I started as a trainee in Gerdau, a steel mill company located in the countryside of Brazil. I was in charge of shipping, mainly working on shipments of coal to USA, Australia and Canada. Then, I worked as a broker in Maersk Broker and moved to London and Buenos Aires where my focus area was ECSA. Later, I moved back to Brazil to join NORDEN as assistant chartering manager.

What does your typical workday look like?

Today, we are more connected through cell phones and apps. So, my day usually starts off by checking my pop-up messages and talking with my colleagues in Copenhagen, who are 4-5 hours ahead from us depending on the time of the year. I work out at 6:30 a.m. every day and get in at the office at 9 a.m. where I spend most of my day talking with colleagues, brokers and clients. Chartering is a very dynamic job that requires us to be on top of the market in order to make the right decisions. The interesting thing is that each day is different!

What is the best part of your job?

The personal contact we have with our clients and brokers. To understand their needs and particularities are very interesting and important as NORDEN is involved in almost all types of commodities in dry cargo. In addition, NORDEN has employees of many nationalities, resulting in a very rich working environment.

Why did you choose NORDEN?

NORDEN is a well-established company with a solid background which allows the employee to have his/her own voice. The company supports growth, and most heads of P&L's and overseas offices have been insourced. NORDEN is also a company ahead of its time because they recognise and reward talent and performance and supports more women in shipping.
